On the stage there are nine gambling tables covered with green cloth and Gogol’s bust nearby which seems to be watching the action. All the characters wear identical clothes — white shirts and black three-piece suits. They are all the same, everyone is equal in this game. This production involves no mysticism which is frequently associated with Gogol. The cheats exist in accordance with the rules of gambling and deceiving. Their main aim is to deceive everyone without being fooled. In our cruel age of deals this play by Gogol proves to be more than acute.
The production is a participant of many Russian and international festivals.
