Gregory Gobernik was born in China in 1944. He moved to the USSR at the age of 17. In 1970 he graduated from the Novosibirsk Conservatory majoring in theory and composition. Since 1972 Gobernik has been a member of the Composers’ Union of the USSR. Throughout his career he has frequently been chief music director in drama theatres all over the country. He has been repeatedly awarded with diplomas for the music provided for productions which were staged in different theatres all over Russia. Composer is the author of 7 musicals, an opera, a ballet, vocal and instrumental pieces as well as compositions for a choir and for an orchestra. He provided music for a number of Soviet and Russian feature films. He has also composed music for more than 500 theatre productions in the theatres of Russia, the Baltic States, Poland, Israel, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain and the USA.
From 1992 to 1997 Gobernik was the artistic director of the Novosibirsk Youth Theatre “The Globe”. Since 1998 he has been acting as the deputy artistic director of the Maly Theatre. Since 2001 he has also been the musical director of the actors’ and directors’ course in the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Sergey Zhenovach’s workshop.
His cooperation with The Theatre Art Studio includes such productions as “The Family in Decline”, “The Gamblers”, “The Battle of Life”, “Three Years”, “The Notebooks”, “Brother Ivan Fyodorovich” and others.
