Sergey Zhenovach: “When creating “Pushkin Hills”, we were very excited, we worked with passion and had much interest in it. Getting to know a writer like Dovlatov is a big event for us. His prose contains huge theatrical power, he is perfect for stage, his dialogues are made for listening, articulating, memorizing. In the middle of the story is a writer, Boris Alikhanov, who is in a state of internal crisis. He escapes to a Pushkin Hills Preserve in order to be alone and reconsider his life. It is a bout of soul in its own way.
Pushkin is the co-author of our play. Through Pushkin Boris Alikhanov analyzes himself, the truthfulness of his relations, his deeds, his thoughts and memories. He is on the verge of a new life and is facing a choice that can possibly change everything. And Pushkin’s poetry takes this story to a whole new level. An important thing is that Dovlatov began writing his novel when he himself was staying at Pushkin’s preserve. He finished it in America, though, when the deed was done”.
