This story is somewhat autobiographical. There’s a merchant’s shop, narrow Moscow streets and shopping stalls, all familiar to Chekhov… It’s the very first story Chekhov wrote after his journey to Sakhalin which produced a major change in his life and perception. It’s also a crucial text which combines everything that has already been done and what will be done later. The story focuses on the attempts to achieve family happiness… without love, it’s about the agonizing attempts to put up with the fact that one can live a life without the most important feeling.
In 2010 Three Years took part in the Chekhov’s Days International Festival which commemorated the 150-th anniversary of the writer’s birth.
